Best Practices for eForms

Therefore™ eForms gives experienced users access to powerful customization tools to suit their organization's specific needs when it comes to form-based data capture. Due to the versatility and level of customization available with Therefore™ eForms, there are principles and best practices recommended to follow when designing a form. These principles are:

  1. Using Therefore™ eForms primarily for form-based data capture. The forms should focus on collecting, presenting and validating information.

  2. Keeping the use of scripting within the scope of the form requirement. Instead of using scripting to extend the function of Therefore™ eForms beyond form-based data capture, restructure the process so the specialized user experience can be provided by an adequate external application.

  3. Avoid substantial use of business logic with JavaScript. Use of customer-specific scripting increases dependency on implementation details and cannot be guaranteed in the same way as standard documented product functionality.

  4. Minimize dependencies on implementation details over existing documented functionality and supported interfaces.

  5. Designing the form with the full life cycle of the solution in mind, so it can be maintained and updated over time. This means avoiding non-supported uses of Therefore™ eForms that could change unexpectedly with an update.

Therefore™ eForms is not meant for the design of web applications through the means of its customization tools. It is optimized for form-based data capture with further downstream processing in the Therefore™ platform.
Therefore™ eForms is a good fit for: Consider a dedicated application when:
Users entering structured information A substantial amount of JavaScript and business logic is being used
Validating information Complex navigation is implemented and a highly dynamic user interface is required.
Conditional use of fields The application state must be maintained across interactions
Pre-populating and calculating field values Several external service integrations are being used
Collecting documents and supporting information Business-critical functions are implemented predominantly through client-side code
Initiating / Continuing a processes with submission of a form Strong reliance on implementation-specific form behavior.

Form-specific scripting may still be appropriate within the scope of collecting and submitting information. However, if this is used to turn the solution into fundamentally an application experience, consider instead using a supported external application.

Support Boundaries and Limitations

Standard Therefore™ eForms functionality is supported, however, the development, debugging, maintenance and adaptation of customer-specific JavaScript, CSS and other forms of custom code are not part of the standard Therefore™ product support.
